Monthly Aircraft Movements: Small airports - Airports without NAV CANADA Towers or Flight Service Stations, May 2017

Analysis

Take-offs and landings at 127 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers reached a total of 61,833 movements in May. Ten airports accounted for 41% of the month’s activity: Peterborough, Ontario (5,230 movements), Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (3,065), St. Theresa Point, Manitoba (2,720), Yorkton Municipal, Saskatchewan (2,295), Moosonee, Ontario (2,264), Trois-Rivières, Quebec (2,069), Island Lake, Manitoba (1,938), Drummondville, Quebec (1,898), Red Lake, Ontario (1,836) and Comox, British Columbia (1,742).

Total aircraft movements for the 120 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible increased from 59,072 to 60,009 in May 2017 as 72 airports reported more movements. The largest gains were recorded at the following airports: St. Theresa Point (+1,174 movements), Yorkton Municipal (+847) and Island Lake (+387). Among those airports with decreases, the largest reductions were reported at Tillsonburg, Ontario (-1,079) and Collingwood, Ontario (-579).

In May 2017, there were 44,739 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) reported by 108 airports with Goose Bay (3,065 movements) and St. Theresa Point (2,712) recording the largest numbers.

Fifty-five airports reported 14,415 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough remained the most active site with 4,658 take-offs and landings, representing 32% of the total local movements reported.
