Data for this variable is available for reference years 1992 to 2001, not applicable 2002 on. Rural enumeration areas can be quite large (i.e. over a few thousand square kilometres). Hence, the actual latitude of residence for the household can be rather far from the latitude given by the center of the EA. Latitude is defined as the angular measurement of a location expressed in degrees north or south of the equator.

Notes: This variable reflects the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Data for this variable is available for reference years 1992 to 2001, not applicable 2002 on. A household is flagged to reside in a population centre if the population centre code from the Geographic Attribute File (GAF) is not '0000'. A household is flagged to reside in a rural area if the population centre code from the GAF is '0000'. The population centre codes are determined by Geography Division of Statistics Canada. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre predetermined by the 1986 Census. xurbsz25 -- Urban size, population of area of residence

    • Type and length: Character(2)
    • Description: Population size of population centre. Population of area of residence. Notes: This variable reflects the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Data for this variable is available for reference years 1992 to 2001, not applicable 2002 on. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre predetermined by the 1986 Census. However, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 1991 Census population counts. In areas where population declined, this can result in some population centre having a population of less than 1,000 according to the 1991 Census. Hence, in the 1991 Census geography-base, there is a population centre population size group for "0 to 999".

    • Type and length: Character(2)
    • Description: Employment insurance region for the household as of December 31 of the reference year. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. The categories for this variable changed to incorporate the changes that occurred between the 1991 and 2001 Censuses. The categories take into account the boundary adjustments, renaming of areas, creation of areas and retirement of areas between the censuses. Codes for retired areas and areas with boundary adjustments are only applicable for reference years prior to 1999. Codes for areas created after the 1991 Census are applicable only for reference years 1999 and on. Codes for areas that have been renamed after the 1991 Census are applicable in all reference years. The applicable years are indicated in brackets beside each category. The code set for EIR change by adding new EIR codes so the code set is common for both census geographies. The reference years indicated in brackets implies that the corresponding code is applicable only to those reference years. For the 1991 geography, the July 1996 delineation of EIR is used and for the 2001 geography, the July 2000 delineation of EIR is used. These regions are used for the administration of the employment insurance program from Human Resources Development Canada starting in July 1996. However, these codes have been added to the SLID database back to 1992. Available only for reference years up to 2008.

yfedre25 -- Federal electoral district of residence, December31, refyear

    • Type and length: Character(3)
    • Description: Federal electoral district (FED) of residence for the household as of December 31 of the reference year. The codes are unique at the provincial level, but not the Canada level; if categories from more than one province are being used in the same study, then concatenate PVRES (province) with this variable. The FED is an area represented by a member of the House of Commons. The FED boundaries used for the 2001 census are based on the 1996 Representation Order. Note that the 1991 Census was taken according to the 1987 Representation Order. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. For a detailed code set for the 2001 Census Geography, please refer to GeoSuite 2001 (Catalogue no. 92F0085XCB) and for the 1991 Census Geography, please refer to GeoRef 91 (Catalogue no. 92-345D).

ylngre25 -- Longitude of household residence as of December 31, refyear

    • Type and length: Decimal(10.6)
    • Description: Longitude of the residence for the household as of December 31 of the reference year. The fractions of degree are expressed in decimals rather than minutes and seconds. Notes: Longitude of residence for the household for reference years prior to 1999 were given by the center of the enumeration area (EA), which follows the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Longitude of residence for the household for reference years from 1999 and on are given by the center of the dissemination area (DA), which follows the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. Thus, a minor variation in the longitude exists between 1998 and 1999 even if the household did not move. Rural dissemination areas can be quite large (i.e. over a few thousand square kilometres). Hence, the actual longitude of residence for the household can be rather far from the longitude given by the center of the DA. Longitude is defined as the angular measurement of a location east or west of the prime meridian (which runs through Greenwich, England).

ysactp25 -- Statistical Area Classification type of residence, refyear

    • Type and length: Character(2)
    • Description: Statistical Area Classification type of residence for the household as of December 31 of the reference year (available for 2001 Census Geography only). A census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) is made up of one or more adjacent municipalities centered on a large population centre, also known as the main population centre. The census population count of the main population centre is at least 10,000 to form a CA and at least 100,000 to form a CMA. If the population of the main population centre of a CA declines below 10,000, the CA is retired. However, once an area becomes a CMA, it is retained as a CMA even if the population of its main population centre declines below 100,000. When a CA has a main population centre of at least 50,000 based on census counts, it is subdivided into census tracts. Census tracts are maintained for the CA even if the population of the main population centre subsequently falls below 50,000. All CMAs are subdivided into census tracts. The CMA and CA influenced zone (MIZ) is a new concept applied to areas outside CMAs and CAs. Census subdivisions (CSDs) outside CMAs and CAs are assigned to one of four categories according to the degree of influence (strong, moderate, weak or no influence) that CMAs and/or CAs collectively have on them. The strong MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow of 30% or more (at least 30% of the total employed labour force living in the CSD works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The moderate MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow percentage between 5% and under 30% (at least 5%, but less than 30%, of the total employed labour force living in the municipality works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The weak MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow percentage more than 0%, but less than 5% (more than 0%, but less than 5% of the total employed labour force living in the municipality works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The no MIZ category includes those CSDs with fewer than 40 people in the resident labour force commuting to work in CMA/CA main population centres. Note: YSACTYP is only available from reference year 1999 and on since this classification was introduced in the 2001 Census. YSACTYP replaced YCATYP, which was previously used to group CMA and CA types. Available only for reference years up to 2008 only.

yurbcd25 -- Urban area code for household as of December 31 of refyear

    • Type and length: Character(4)
    • Description: Population centre code for this household as of December 31 of the reference year. Population centre codes are unique four digit codes for all of Canada. They reflect the order in which they were created. Codes created in one census remain constant thereafter. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. The population centre codes are determined by Geography Division of Statistics Canada. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre predetermined by the 1986 Census. In the 2001 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area in the same way, but as recorded by the current census population counts (i.e. 2001 Census). All areas outside population centres are classified as rural. For a detailed population centre code set for the 1991 Census geography, please refer to GeoRef 91 (Catalogue no. 92-345D). yurbru25 -- Flag - Household in urban/rural, December 31, refyear

    • Type and length: Character(1)
    • Description: Flag indicating if this household was in a population centre or rural area as of December 31 of the reference year. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. The categories for YURBRUR are the same. For reference years prior to 1999, a household is flagged to reside in a population centre if the population centre code from the Geographic Attribute File (GAF) is not '0000'. A household is flagged to reside in a rural area if the population centre code from the GAF is '0000'. For reference years 1999 on, a household is flagged to reside in a population centre if the first 2 digits of the population centre code from the GAF or the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) are not '99'. A household is flagged to reside in a rural area if the first 2 digits of the population centre code from the GAF or PCCF are '99'. The population centre codes are determined by Geography Division of Statistics Canada. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre as predetermined by the 1986 Census. yurbsz25 -- Urban size - Population of area of residence

    • Type and length: Character(2)
    • Description: Population size of population area. Population of area of residence. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre predetermined by the 1986 Census. However, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 1991 Census population counts. In areas where population decline, this can result in some population centres having a population of less than 1,000 according to the 1991 Census. Hence, for the 1991 Census geography-base, there is a population centre population size group for "0 to 999". In the 2001 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area in the same way, but as recorded by the current census population count (i.e. 2001 Census). As well, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 2001 Census population counts. Hence, in the 2001 Census geography-base, there is no inconsistency between the population centre definition and population counts. Consequently, in SLID there is no population centre with population count for the group "0 to 999" starting in reference year 1999 on. Hence, the categories for this variable are the same and the applicable years are indicated in brackets beside each category. Available only for reference years up to 2008 only.

yuszga25 -- Adjusted size of area of residence

    • Type and length: Character(1)
    • Description: Adjusted size of area of residence is assigned according to the variable YCMAPO (CMA/CA population). However, if the household is not in a CMA/CA, the YUSZGA code depends on the variable YURBPO (Population of area of residence) and YUSZGA is equal to the variable YURBSZG (Size of area of residence). Note: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 and on follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries. The categories for YUSZGA are the same. Adjusted size of area of residence for determining relevant LICO. All areas within the same CMA/CA will be coded to the same size. Available only for reference years up to 2008 only.
