hhtyp25 -- Household type reference person

    • Type and length: Character(2)
    • Description: Household type. A household is composed of two or more persons living together who are related by blood, marriage, adoption or common-law. This variable is set using the major income earner in the household as the reference person. To reduce the length of the category descriptions, the following terms are used: UNATTACHED INDIVIDUAL: While the definition of household does not include persons who do not live with a relative, such persons (called unattached individuals) are assigned a household id. If desired, data users can use this variable to separate unattached individuals from households. ELDERLY: The major income earner in the household is aged 65 or over. Spouse: The partner living with the major income earner in the household, including married, common-law and same-sex relationships. MARRIED COUPLE: The major income earner and his/her spouse. RELATIVE: A person related to the major income earner by blood, marriage, adoption or common-law. CHILDREN: The household includes at least one child (birth, adopted, step, or foster) of the major income earner under age 18. Other relatives may also be in the household. Children of guardians are not considered "children" in this classification. In other words, older relatives are not treated as de facto parents when there is no direct parent identified. LONE-PARENT FAMILY: Includes at least one child as defined above. Households where the parent is 65 years or older are excluded. OTHER RELATIVE: A person in the household who is not the major income earner nor his/her spouse or child under age 18. Children aged 18 or over are considered to be "other relatives".
