The title of this map is "Police-reported crime rate, by north-south region, 2013." The colours in the map identify the crime rates for each North and South region compared to the national average (5190 incidents per 100,000 population).

North encompasses the Territories as well as the northern regions of Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. South refers to the southern regions of these provinces and includes Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The dashed red line indicates the boundary between North and South within the provinces.

Category 1 is coloured mottled green; it indicates regions where the crime rate is below the national average. Category 1 includes southern Ontario, northern and southern Quebec, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.  

Category 2 is cream-coloured; it indicates regions where the crime rate is 1 to 2 times the national average. Category 2 includes southern British Columbia, southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, northern Ontario, Nova Scotia, and southern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Category 3 is coloured light brown; it indicates regions where the crime rate is 2 to 3 times the national average. Category 3 includes northern British Columbia and northern Alberta.

Category 4 is coloured medium brown; it indicates regions where the crime rate is 3 to 4 times the national average. Category 4 includes northern Newfoundland and Labrador.

Category 5 is coloured dark brown; it indicates regions where the crime rate is over 4 times the national average. Category 5 includes northern Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The boundaries between the provinces and the territories are indicated with black lines. The locations and names of the capitals in each province and territory are included in the map.
