The column headers provide population size as well as the number of officers working in municipal policing, provincial policing and with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (grouped by type of Royal Canadian Mounted Police contract). As well, the rate of officers per hundred thousand population and the percentage change in the rate from the previous year and from ten years previous are shown."

Excludes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Includes National Police Services and Departmental and Divisional Administration.
Newfoundland and Labrador does not have any municipal police services. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (a provincial police service) provides policing to most of the larger municipalities.
Excludes personnel from Royal Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters. The Ontario Provincial Police deploy 1,955 officers to provide municipal policing services under contract and these are included as municipal, not provincial policing.
Excludes personnel from Royal Canadian Mounted Police Training Academy.
Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut do not have any municipal police forces. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is responsible for providing policing to the territories.
Note(s):
Represents the actual number of permanent, fully-sworn police officers of all ranks (or their full-time equivalents) as of May 15, 2012. This number also includes officers who are deployed to contract positions and who are not available for general policing duties in their community. Police officers on long-term leave who are not being paid by the police service’s annual budget are excluded.
