Provincial distribution of gross domestic expenditures on research and development — By performing sector, 2011
Table summary
This table displays the provincial distribution of the gross domestic expenditures on research and development by performing sector for the most recent year of data available by province. The row headers divide the table into two parts with the first part representing data in millions of dollars and the second one providing the data in percentages. The row headers in the first part show gross domestic expenditures on research and development in millions of dollar by performing sector. The column headers show Canada first and then list the provinces starting with Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia. There are two sub-sections in the second part of the table for the percentage data. The first sub-section shows the provincial distribution of gross domestic expenditure on research and development by performing sector as a percentage of the total national research and development expenditure. The second sub-section displays gross domestic expenditure on research and development by performing sector as a percentage of the total research and development expenditure separately for Canada and each province. There are two footnotes. The first footnote states that total data for Canada includes the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut therefore the sum of the provinces will not equal the Canada total. The second footnote indicates provincial research councils and foundations are added to the provincial government sector. A note indicates that components may not add to totals due to rounding. A second note states that Quebec and Ontario figures include federal government expenditures on research and development performed in the National Capital Region. A third note explains that performing sector data for the private non-profit sector are only available at the Canada level starting in the year 2000. The fourth note states that the business enterprise sector's research and development expenditure distribution by source of funds is modelled.

Canada includes the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, therefore the sum of the provinces will not equal the Canada total.
Includes provincial research councils and foundations.
Note(s):
Components may not add to totals due to rounding. Quebec and Ontario figures include federal government expenditures on research and development performed in the National Capital Region. The private non-profit (PNP) sector appears in both the performing and funding sector for the gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) for Canada. Commencing with reference year 2000 the data for the private non-profit sector performing research and development are not distributed by provinces or territories. The national totals of research and development by performing sector include the PNP sector. The data for the private non-profit sector funding research and development continue to be distributed by provinces and territories. The provincial and territorial distribution by sources of funds of the business enterprise sector R&D expenditures is derived through a modeling system, which prorates values based on reported business enterprise provincial and territorial R&D.
