This vertical bar chart illustrates how parents or guardians of First Nations children under six years old living off-reserve have rated their feelings about various aspects of their community, 2006.

The X axis lists six aspects of community rated by parents or guardians, which include:

  • Their community as a place with good schools, nursery schools, and early childhood education programs

  • Their community as a place with adequate facilities for children, such as community centres, rinks, gyms and parks

  • Their community as a safe community

  • Their community as a place with health facilities

  • Their community as a place with actively involved members of the community

  • Their community as a place with First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultural activities

Each aspect of community is composed of four vertical bars.

The first bar represents the percentage of children whose parents or guardians rated that aspect of community as excellent or very good.
The second bar represents the percentage of children whose parents or guardians rated that aspect of community as good.
The third bar represents the percentage of children whose parents or guardians rated that aspect of community as fair or poor.
The fourth bar represents the percentage of children whose parents or guardians did not state a rating for that aspect of community.

The Y axis is measured in percentages and increases by increments of ten from 0 to 60

In terms of their communities as places with good schools, nursery schools, and early childhood education programs, 53% of First Nations children under six years old living off-reserve had parents or guardians who rated their community as excellent or very good
28% had parents or guardians who rated their community as good
15% had parents or guardians who rated their community as fair or poor
4% had parents or guardians who did not state a rating.

In terms of their feelings towards their communities as places with adequate facilities for children, such as community centres, rinks, gyms and parks, 51 % of First Nations children under six years old living off-reserve had parents or guardians who rated their community as excellent or very good
27% had parents or guardians who rated their community as good
20% had parents or guardians who rated their community as fair or poor
3% had parents or guardians who did not state a rating

In terms of their feelings towards their communities as safe communities, 46 % of First Nations children under six years old living off-reserve had parents or guardians who rated their community as excellent or very good
28% had parents or guardians who rated their community as good
24% had parents or guardians who rated their community as fair or poor
2% had parents or guardians who did not state a rating

In terms of their feelings towards their communities as places with health facilities, 45% of First Nations children under six years old living off-reserve had parents or guardians who rated their community as excellent or very good
