Activity 1: Taking a census
Suggested education level: Elementary, 1 class
Suggested subjects: Art, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies,
Description: Students learn what the census is and conduct a census of their own by counting the people in their homes and class.
Activity 2: Add! Don't Subtract! — A Complete Count
Suggested education level: Elementary, 2 classes
Suggested subjects: Geography, Mathematics, Social Studies
Description: Students learn the concepts of complete count and undercount, interpret a map, summarize data, and make decisions.
Activity 3: Important Decisions Don't Just Happen! Using Data to Plan Your Services
Suggested education level: Intermediate, 1 to 2 classes
Suggested subjects: Geography, Mathematics, Social Studies
Description: Students gain hands-on experience using census-like data as a basis for decisions about community services and businesses.
Activity 4: Where Do We Come From?
Suggested education level: Intermediate, English as a second language (ESL), 1 to 2 classes
Suggested subjects: ESL, Geography, Social Studies, Language Arts
Description: Students learn about the places of birth of immigrants to Canada and how this information is gathered through a census. Students gain an understanding of the multicultural nature of Canadian society by examining the cultural diversity present withing their classroom.

Activity 5: Agriculture at a Glance
Suggested education level: Elementary (5A, C), Intermediate (5A, B, C), Secondary (5A, B), ¼ to 2 classes
Suggested subjects: Economics, Family Studies, Geography, History, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Theatre Arts
Description: Students learn about agriculture, Canada's most important primary industry, examine the trends identified by the Census of Agriculture and work on one or all of the activities:

  • 5A: Students create a play in which they assume the roles of a farm operator managing a farm in transition;
  • 5B: Students measure and compare the size of their classroom or school to the size of the average Canadian farm;
  • 5C: Students make the link between Canadian grains and ethnic homemade breads in a short matching game.
Activity 6: Immigration
Suggested education level: Intermediate, ESL, 1 to 2 classes
Suggested subjects: Family Studies, Geography, History, Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies
Description: Students develop an awareness and appreciation of the multicultural nature of Canadian society. Students complete a series of graphs showing Canada's immigration patterns over time. They carry out a small survey by making up a class profile, and review the language questions from the 2006 Census questionnaire.
Activity 7: That's Easy for You to Say! — Survey Project
Suggested education level: Secondary (long project: 8 to 10 classes, short project: 2 to 3 classes)
Suggested subjects: Data Management, Mathematics, Social Studies
Description: Students study the process of designing, conducting and reporting a survey. They have the option of carring out a survey project.
Activity 8: Census Game
Suggested education level: Secondary, 1 class
Suggested subjects: Economics, Geography, History, Social Studies
Description: Students participate in a game designed to help them understand the range of demographic, social and economic information provided by the census.
