Study: Canada's employment downturn, October 2008 to October 2009

Employment declined much faster in the early months of the current economic downturn than it did in the early months of the recessions in 1981 and 1990. However, employment levels in the next seven months of this current downturn were relatively stable, while employment had continued to decline in the previous downturns.

There were $1.8 trillion in pension assets in Canada at the end of 2008, down from $2.1 trillion in 2007 but nearly four times greater than the holdings of $0.5 trillion in 1990.
