Survey purpose

The purpose of this survey is to obtain information on quantities of domestic cement that are produced and shipped by Canadian manufacturers and quantities of domestic and imported cement distributed by region and exported. Data collected by this survey provide an indicator of the economic condition of the producing industry and can serve as input to study market share and industry trends.

Sharing Agreement

In order to avoid duplication of enquiry and to provide for a uniform system of statistics, agreements for the exchange of information collected in this survey, have been made under Section 12 of the Canada Statistics Act, with provincial mining departments in the provinces of Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia, in respect of establishments located within the boundaries of their respective Province; and with the federal Department of Natural Resources Canada with respect to all establishments. Survey purpose

Sharing Agreement

To reduce response burden, Statistics Canada has entered into an agreement under Section 12 of the Canada Statistics Act with Alberta’s department of Forestry, Lands and Wildlife for the sharing of data. The Section 12 agreement shall not apply to your sawmill reports if an authorized officer or person of your company objects in writing to the Chief Statistician and mails the letter to the Manufacturing and Energy Division of Statistics Canada.

A. Production and Stocks of lumber:

Production - Report all lumber sawn in your mill, during the month. (Exclude re-sawing and lumber purchased or custom sawn for you by others.)

Stocks - Report all lumber held on the first and last day of the month, whether owned by your company or held for others.

Note: For species selection follow Standard Grading rules for Canadian lumber.

B. Receipts of lumber:

Purchases - Report all lumber purchased during the month.

Transfers In - Report all receipts, during the month, of lumber sawn for you by others from logs owned by you (custom sawn for you) and include lumber transferred to your plant from other sawmills of your own company.

C. Disposition of lumber:

(1) Shipments - Report all shipments, during the month, of lumber sold by you including shipments on consignment. Report also lumber owned by you and transferred to others for further processing on a custom basis (i.e. planing, kiln drying, etc.) and subsequent shipments.

Instructions

Quantity made during month – Should represent the gross production from your machines less the amount of waste prior to shipments, unless the waste can be used for other purposes and has a commercial value. Report all production which qualifies under these terms regardless of where or to whom sold, except seconds. Seconds are to be considered as a scrap until sold and should be added to the production for the month in which they are shipped.

Quantity shipped during month – Report quantities of all your materials (both those manufactured by you and those purchased from other manufacturers or imported) shipped to customers in Canada or to other countries. Do Not Include Sales To Other Firms In Canada Producing Asphalt Roofing Products.

  2. Smooth surfaced organic felt roll roofings: include all smooth roofings as produced on the roofing machine and all similar products, such as Cap sheets, Base sheets, etc. Roll roofings surfaced with granules less than No. 11 gauge are to be classified as smooth roll roofings, viz., 60# coloured roofing.
  3. Mineral surfaced organic felt roll roofings and sidings: include all roll roofings surfaced with granules No. 11 and coarser and all roll type sidings produced completely on the roofing machine.

PRODUCTION

The total actual production of rough steel castings during the month reported, is to be shown in the space provided, in weight to the nearest metric tonne, omitting decimals and fractions.

SHIPMENTS

(a) Are to be shown in weights to the nearest metric tonne in the proper spaces provided on the form, according to the end-uses of the castings. Weights in the Rough Castings are required. Where a foundry rough-machines or finishes castings before shipment, the finished shipping weights will be accepted only when the Rough weights are not obtained in the ordinary course of business.

(b) In the case of “captive” operation, i.e. where a firm produces castings for own use, transfer of same should be treated as a shipment for statistical purposes and disposition should be recorded against applicable S.D.C. No. designated in section 5.

* Steel is the first solid state after melting suitable for further processing or sale, including ingots, steel castings and continuous or pressure cast blooms, billets, slabs or other product forms.

** Scrap Classification
The producers of ferrous scrap describe unprocessed scrap by its origin. Home (own generated) scrap is produced in the manufacture of steel mill products, whereas prompt industrial scrap is generated by the secondary manufacturing industry and obsolete scrap comes from discarded machinery, equipment and structures.

Note: 1. Alloy steel includes only steel where the minimum of the range specified in any of the elements named exceeds the following percentages: Nickel, 0.40%; chromium, 0.43%; copper, 0.50%; manganese, 1.65%; silicon, 0.50%; molybdenum, 0.10%; vanadium, tungsten, cobalt, titanium and zirconium any percent.
