Brochure — Canadian Housing Survey

Housing information is key to overcoming housing challenges

Housing is more than just a roof over our heads

Learning about the housing needs and experiences of Canadians helps us understand housing challenges across the country. For this, Statistics Canada needs your help!

The 2026 Canadian Housing Survey (CHS) collects valuable information about housing needs and experiences.

Your responses will be used to help understand and address issues such as access to affordable housing, and to improve housing conditions. Your information is kept strictly confidential.

Statistics Canada conducts the CHS in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

This survey will help answer questions such as:

  • What housing affordability challenges are Canadians facing?
  • What parts of the population have experienced situations such as homelessness and being evicted?
  • What kind of homes and neighbourhoods do Canadians want to live in?
  • How do housing outcomes differ between sociodemographic groups?

The person responsible for making housing decisions in your household should complete the 2026 CHS. If you are a renter living at the same address as the homeowner, the homeowner should complete the survey.

You can make a world of difference

People in all 10 provinces are being invited to complete this survey. By taking part, you will help Statistics Canada provide an up-to-date snapshot of the housing needs of Canadians and the state of affordable housing across the country.

The information collected will guide decisions about social and housing programs designed to meet the needs of Canadians.
Your answers are important, because they represent not only you, but other Canadians like you. Every response helps to improve the quality of the results.

Whatever your housing situation, your participation matters.

Participating is easy

Please refer to the letter you received from Statistics Canada. It contains the information you need to access and complete the survey.

We know Canadians are busy, so we very much appreciate you taking the time to assist us with the CHS.

The information you provide is confidential

All information collected by Statistics Canada is kept strictly confidential and protected by the Statistics Act. Statistics Canada cannot release any information that would identify you or any member of your household without your consent. This information cannot be released under any other law, not even the Access to Information Act.
