Statistical Sampling Theory (Course code 0413)

To familiarize participants with sampling methods and their application.

Benefits to the participants

With this course participants will obtain a thorough understanding of statistical sampling theory. Consideration will be given to the application of the theory in the context of survey sampling.

Target population

Employees who have to develop and implement complex sampling plans in their work and wish to get an advanced knowledge of sampling theory.

Course outline

Basic concepts (population, sampling frame, sampling units, inclusion probabilities, etc.), simple random sampling with and without replacement, systematic sampling (linear, fractional, circular), Bernoulli sampling, stratification principles, sample size, sampling with probability proportional to size, cluster sampling, multi-stage sampling, multi-phase sampling, estimators that use auxiliary data, calibration estimators, resampling methods.

Advanced knowledge of mathematical statistics and basic knowledge in sampling theory.

It is important to notice that the duration for this course has been extended to three months at the rate of one session per week to give participants enough time to study all the material covered and to prepare in advance for each session. One could not insist enough on the importance of this preparation in order to get all the benefits from this course.

5 days (1/2 day per week during 10 weeks)
