Jobs in data collection

Statistics Canada hires Data Collection Clerks as needed for jobs up to 35 hours a week to conduct a variety of surveys. Data Collection Clerks may work from home or on-site based on operational requirements. They primarily conduct phone interviews or travel to conduct interviews in the respondent's home. Data Collection Clerks may be eligible for Public Service group insurance benefit plans.

Statistics Canada Data Collection Clerks are central to collect essential information covering a variety of topics such as health, labor, housing, environment, culture, business and economic. They help produce key information that provide a solid foundation to governments, businesses, unions and non-profit organizations, as well as individual Canadians for making informed decisions.

Jobs in data collection

There are three types of jobs available in data collection. Select the job title below for more information.

Data Collection Clerk

A Data Collection Clerk conducts survey collection activities with the public, this includes using a variety of methods to obtain statistical information as required by the Statistics Act. They will organize and complete work assignments as per instructions. An Data Collection Clerk will have to use a variety of equipment and materials associated with the gathering of survey information. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining productive and harmonious relationships with respondents (households, persons, businesses, institutions, and farm operators) of assigned surveys. They contact respondents either by phone or in-person, conduct interviews and obtain completed questionnaires.

Data Collection Supervisor

A Data Collection Supervisor provides hands-on, day-to-day oversight of Statistics Survey Operations staff, ensuring, in collaboration with the Data Collection Manager, that they perform consistently and meet operational objectives and goals.

  • Oversees daily collection operations to ensure adherence to pre-determined targets.
  • Directly supervises a group of Data Collection Clerks (includes recruitment, training, scheduling, performance management and evaluation and approval of pay/leave/travel claims).
  • Conducts data gathering activities using a variety of interviewing techniques, methodologies and technologies in support of statistical programs.
  • Conducts field sampling operations including the verification of sample areas and the application of sampling ratios.
  • Supports Data Collection Clerks in handling difficult respondents or situations and participates in data collection as required to obtain respondent participation.
Data Collection Manager

Key Activities of a Data Collection Manager may include:

  • Assists in the management of regional data collection activities of a fluctuating number of ongoing and ad hoc surveys and/or census projects.
  • Establishes and adjusts work schedules. Analyses and monitors the work of subordinate staff. Manages the work of subordinate supervisors.
  • Participates in the preparation of budgets, manages authorized budgets and assists in the preparation of financial reviews.
  • Oversees the recruitment and selection of Statistical Survey Operations employees and provides and/or oversees their training.
  • Reviews work methods and procedures to assess and improve the security and quality control of regional data collection.
  • Promotes respondent participation in surveys.
  • Assesses, resolves and responds to complaints from the public.
  • Communicates orally and in writing with staff, respondents and individuals from other government Departments and agencies.
  • Gathers local intelligence on changes in regional market places, industries and communities which could impact respondent relations, data quality and survey response rates and advises Head Office staff of these trends

Statistics Canada is establishing national inventory for three regions within Canada to facilitate recruitment when there is a need to do so. The national inventory is used to fill positions in any province or territory across Canada.

Inventories for Northwest and Northeast regions are also available. The Northwest regions are Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The Northeast regions are Nunavik (northern Quebec) and Nunatsiavut (northern Newfoundland). The inventories are specific to these regions and hiring priority is placed on currently living in those regions.
