Purpose of this study

Statistics Canada is exploring ways to improve its methods for selecting households in Canada to participate in surveys through the Study on Respondent Selection. These improvements will help reduce the number of people that are contacted to complete an interview and therefore reduce the overall cost of the surveys.

This questionnaire collects basic demographic information about the members of your household as well as information on your residential phone lines and the cellular telephones that you have in your home. Your answers will be kept confidential and will be used solely for statistical purposes.

Your answers are very important and the information you provide will only be used to help improve Statistics Canada’s methods for selecting survey respondents.

Section A - Dwelling

The address where you received this questionnaire is the address of :

  1. a private home
  2. a private home and a business
  3. a vacation home
  4. a collective dwelling (religious institution, a nursing home, a hotel or motel, or a large boarding house (in which 10 or more unrelated persons live))
  5. an institution (a collective dwelling which exists primarily to provide short-term or long-term custody or medical care)
  6. a business (If this address is only for a business, please return the questionnaire uncompleted)

Section B – Household Members

The next questions ask for important basic information about the members in your household.

Including yourself, list below all persons who usually live in your household.

  • include all persons who regard the dwelling as their usual residence or are staying in the dwelling and have no usual place or residence elsewhere
  • include Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, and non-permanent residents (person who are in Canada on a work permit, a student visa or a Minister's permit, or who are applying for refugee status, as well as their dependents)
  • single students should be considered as usual residents of their parents' dwelling if they have spent 30 or more days there in the past 12 months
  • spouses away at work or school should be considered as usual residents of their spouse's dwelling
  • children in joint custody should be included in the home of the parent where they live most of the time. Children who spend equal time with each parent should be included in the home of the parent with whom they are staying on the day the questionnaire is completed
