New motor vehicle sales, January 2024

New motor vehicle sales data for Canada and the provinces are now available for January. The New Motor Vehicle Sales Survey collects data on monthly sales (in dollars and units) of new motor vehicles in Canada by type of vehicle and by country or region of manufacture.

New Motor Vehicle Sales, 2023

New motor vehicle sales increase in 2023

In 2023, there were 1,755,741 new motor vehicles sold in Canada, up 12.7% (+197,504 units) from 2022. The increase in 2023 was partly due to the recovery of the global semiconductors shortage, which affected the new motor vehicle industry in 2022. However, sales of new motor vehicle units were still lower (-11.3%) compared with 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unit sales of almost all new vehicle types increase from 2022, with the exception of passenger vehicles

Sales of new passenger cars continued to decline in 2023, with a drop of 7.0% (-18,955) in units sold compared with 2022. In contrast, there were more heavy trucks (+12.4%), buses (+16.1%) and light trucks (+17.0%) sold in 2023.

Sales increase in dollar terms for all new vehicle types

In dollars terms, total new motor vehicle sales increased 20.4% in 2023 compared with 2022. Sales of buses had the highest increase (+73.8%) in 2023, followed by light trucks (+23.3%), heavy trucks (+22.7%) and passenger cars (+0.3%).
