In March, the number of urban transit passenger trips in Canada reached 134.3 million, representing over four-fifths (81.5%) of the March 2019 ridership, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ridership recovery remains on track
In March 2024, there were 134.3 million passenger trips taken on Canada's urban transit networks, an increase of 6.8% (+8.5 million trips) from March 2023, marking three consecutive years of monthly year-over-year growth since April 2021.
However, despite this continued growth, there were over 30 million fewer passenger trips in March 2024 compared with the same month in 2019.
On a monthly basis, transit ridership increased by 5.3% in March 2024 from February. This was slightly below the average increase of just over 7% recorded over the same February-to-March period in the two years (2018 and 2019) prior to the pandemic.
