Virtual workshop: Working with disaggregated data for better policy outcomes

“Working with disaggregated data for better policy outcomes” is a virtual, instructor-led course designed for junior analysts and individuals who have limited experience in working with data. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the concept of disaggregated data and demonstrate how such data can be used at various stages of the policy-making cycle. 

The workshop will guide participants through the following six modules: 

Module 1: Introduction

  • Discovering disaggregated data and their importance

Module 2: Identify target groups using key findings from disaggregated data

  • Exploring reports and data tables on Statistics Canada’s website that are relevant to the topic being investigated
  • Using disaggregated data to identify the most relevant population groups for specific policy initiatives

Module 3: Disaggregated data standards and quality

  • Understanding the importance and availability of data standards
  • Examining data quality indicators and confidence intervals and how these concepts inform conclusions about group differences

Module 4: Data suppression and data development opportunities

  • Exploring reasons for data suppression, such as confidentiality or quality
  • Navigating data suppression challenges
  • Identifying data development opportunities

Module 5: Communicating findings from disaggregated data

  • Exploring the essential elements of data stories
  • Learning the principles for developing effective narratives using disaggregated data

Module 6: Summary and wrap-up activity

Course activities

  • Case studies and scenarios based on Canadian policy examples
  • Demonstration and application exercises
  • Group polls and breakout room discussions
  • Individual and small group activities

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Eastern time) each day, with a one-hour lunch break
