There were 167,017 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in August, increasing 0.5% from August 2024. In dollar terms, sales decreased 1.7% in August 2025. Sales of new passenger cars increased 1.0% from one year earlier, the third consecutive monthly increase for this subsector. There were also more sales of trucks (+0.4%).
In August, 14,657 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold, a decrease of 37.0% from the same month the previous year. New ZEVs comprised 8.8% of total new motor vehicles sold.
Note to readers
The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
