Sales of refined petroleum products by secondary distributors reached 23.4 billion litres in Canada in 2024, a 1.9% decline from 2023. Products sold consisted of motor gasoline (50.5%), diesel fuel oil (43.5%), light fuel oil (3.4%) and heavy fuel oil (2.6%).
Motor gasoline
In 2024, secondary distributors sold 11.8 billion litres of motor gasoline to end-users, a decrease of 6.8% from 2023. Most of these sales (90.3%) were made to gasoline stations.
Approximately two-thirds (67.0%) of the sales were in Ontario and Quebec, while the remaining one-third came from the rest of Canada.
Diesel fuel oil
In 2024, secondary distributors sold 10.2 billion litres of diesel fuel oil to end-users, a 3.8% increase from 2023. The major customer types included gasoline stations (38.2%), agriculture (14.7%), other commercial and institutional customers (13.9%), road transport and support activities (9.8%), and construction (8.2%).
Nearly half (49.8%) of diesel fuel oil sold to end-users in 2024 was in Ontario and Quebec.
Light fuel oil
Secondary distributors sold 792.1 million litres of light fuel oil to end-users in 2024, down 9.0% from 2023. Almost two-thirds (65.2%) of it was sold to residential customers.
Most of the light fuel oil sales were in the Atlantic provinces (40.3%), followed by Quebec (31.9%) and Ontario (13.3%).

The Annual Survey of Secondary Distributors of Refined Petroleum Products collects sales on motor gasoline, diesel fuel oil, light fuel oil, heavy fuel oil and propane.
Data on propane were collected for the first time in 2020 and these data are available upon request. Additionally, fuel sales to a broader range of industrial end users are also available upon request.
The agriculture industry includes farmers, hunters, trappers and support activities.
These values represent sales to end users and do not include sales to other wholesalers and dealers of refined petroleum products.
