New motor vehicle sales, September 2025

In September, 168,731 new motor vehicles were sold in Canada, up 1.2% from September 2024. Meanwhile, sales in dollar terms declined by 3.2% from the prior year. Over the same period, sales of new trucks rose by 2.9%, while passenger car sales declined 10.1%.

There were 17,192 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) sold in September 2025, a decrease of 43.3% from the same month the previous year. ZEVs accounted for 10.2% of total new motor vehicle sales in the month, compared with 18.2% in September 2024.

Note to readers

The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
