New motor vehicle registrations, third quarter 2025

In the third quarter, Canadians registered a total of 484,415 new motor vehicles, up 0.2% from the same quarter of 2024 and a decrease of 10.6% from the second quarter of 2025.

Among vehicle types, new registrations for vans (+24.2%) and pickup trucks (+0.1%) saw growth in the third quarter of 2025 compared with the same quarter last year. Conversely, new registrations for passenger cars (-1.9%) and multi-purpose vehicles (-0.8%) declined, marking the first year-over-year decrease in new registrations for multi-purpose vehicles since the third quarter of 2022.

Growth in new registrations in terms of fuel types varied in the third quarter of 2025, with hybrid electric vehicles (+29.3%) leading, followed by gasoline-powered vehicles (+5.3%). By contrast, new registrations for battery electric vehicles (-52.3%) faced the largest decline, followed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (-5.2%) and diesel-powered vehicles (-1.9%).

Share of new zero-emission vehicle registrations remains below 10%

In the third quarter, 45,366 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were registered, making up 9.4% of all new motor vehicle registrations. Despite being a slight increase from the previous quarter, when ZEVs represented 8.6% of new registrations, this share reflects a considerable decline compared with the third quarter of 2024, when ZEVs made up 15.7% of all new registrations.

New zero-emission vehicle registrations fall by 40% compared with the same period the previous year

Compared with the third quarter of 2024, new registrations for ZEVs declined by 40.1% in the third quarter of 2025, continuing their downward trend observed earlier this year. New ZEV registrations dropped compared with the previous year across most provinces, including Quebec (-45.7%), New Brunswick (-39.9%), Prince Edward Island (-36.9%), British Columbia (-35.6%), Ontario (-33.7%), Manitoba (-22.1%), Saskatchewan (-21.5%) and Nova Scotia (-16.2%).
