And the Oscar goes to…the recovering industry

March 9, 2023, 11:00 a.m. (EST)

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have had lasting effects on the Canadian film industry.

But the show must always go on.

As the demand for digital streaming services and platforms accelerated, industry operators pivoted away from traditional channels such as movie theatres and film festivals, since they were unable to operate for most of 2021.

As a result, operating revenue for the motion picture and video exhibition industry sharply dropped by -70.6% in 2020 when compared with 2018.

The film and video distribution industry is expected to face continued change, as increasing digital services and streaming will continue to have an impact on the way Canadian distributors operate.

In 2021, the film, television and video post-production industry generated $2.0 billion in operating revenue, a 0.5% increase from 2019.

Despite this national rise in operating revenue, sales decreased by 6.1% from 2019 to $1.7 billion in 2021.

The impacts of the pandemic on the financial estimates will be confirmed during the next releases of the Survey of Service Industries: Film, Television and Video Post-production and Film and Video Distribution (both planned for 2024).  Data for Motion Picture Theatres will be released later in 2023.
