Great Canadian Summer: Muskoka

Muskoka is a popular Canadian vacation destination, known for its brilliant lakeside views, countless hiking trails and year-round natural beauty.

Located a two-hour drive north of Toronto, the regional municipality of Muskoka is one of Ontario’s most popular cottaging destinations.

Although home to 66,674 residents in 2021, Muskoka is a seasonal destination for many. In fact, there are 47,560 private dwellings in Muskoka, but 28,571 of these dwellings are occupied by usual residents (and we don’t just mean the moose).

Muskoka is known to have many seasonal property owners who spend their summers in the region. With a land area of 3839.47 square kilometers and a population density of 17.4 people per square kilometer, the region is the ideal space for nature lovers, fine diners and adventure seekers alike.

This hidden gem continues to gain in popularity as a staple vacation spot for Ontario residents, meaning that constant development has been necessary to accommodate demand.

The construction industry was the biggest employer in the municipality of Muskoka, employing 5,310 people in 2021. The retail-trade industry employed 4,615 people, while the accommodation and food services industry employed 2,295 people.

According to the Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate in the Muskoka-Kawarthas region that contains the District municipality of Muskoka was 4.2% for the three-month average ending in April 2023.

With a population increase of 10% from 2016 (60,614) to 2021 (66,674), the picturesque region of Muskoka continues to attract both new-comers and seasonal visitors all year round.
