Job vacancies in sales and service occupations at their lowest since the fourth quarter of 2016
Job vacancies fell in the first quarter of 2025 to 524,300 (-20,600; -3.8%), following little change in the fourth quarter of 2024. Job vacancies in sales and service occupations fell by 4,600 (-3.0%) to 148,600 in the first quarter of 2025, the lowest level since the fourth quarter of 2016 (147,200). Year over year, job vacancies in sales and service occupations declined by 31,200 (-19.2%) in the first quarter of 2025. This was the largest year-over-year decline among all the broad occupational groups.

Substantial proportions of reproductive-aged women in Canada are current or former users of oral contraceptives
On average, 15.9% of non-pregnant women aged 15 to 49 years had used OCs in the 30 days preceding the survey, while 53.9% reported using them formerly. The majority of both current (67.5%) and former (52.8%) oral contraceptives users reported having used them for at least four years.

Older people are among the most concerned with misinformation in 2023
In 2023, nearly 6 in 10 Canadians (59%) reported being very or extremely concerned about the presence of misinformation online. Just over two-thirds (68%) of Canadians aged 65 to 74 years were extremely or very concerned about misinformation online, compared with close to half (46%) of those aged 15 to 24 years. More than half (53%) of Canadians reported always or often using at least one additional source to verify the accuracy of news stories.
Immigration remains high in the first quarter of 2025, but lower than in recent years
Canada admitted 104,256 immigrants in the first quarter of 2025. This was the smallest number admitted in a first quarter in four years and reflects a lower total permanent immigration target for 2025. However, prior to 2022, Canada had never welcomed more than 86,246 immigrants in a first quarter (which occurred in the first quarter of 2016).

Time with friends has declined steadily
For over 30 years, Canadians have been spending less and less time with friends. In 1986, just under half (47.9%) of Canadians saw friends on an average day. In 2022, this proportion dropped to just under one in five (19.3%). While time spent with friends declined for all age groups, working-age Canadians (25 to 64 years) recorded the sharpest drop over the 30-year period, with their likelihood of seeing a friend on an average day declining by two-thirds.

Streaming continues to sweep the record production and distribution industry in 2023
Streaming sales continued to drive growth in the record production and distribution industry, rising by one-quarter (+25.8%) from 2021 to $517.2 million in 2023, accounting for just under four-fifths (79.2%) of total sound recording sales. Within the vinyl and other format category, sales were up by just over one-third (+34.5%) from 2021 to $84.9 million in 2023. Compact disc sales were down by one-fifth (-19.8%) to $26.0 million in 2023, and downloads (albums and singles) were down by over one-quarter (-28.1%).
