When it comes to changing the way they bring home their groceries, you might say that Canadians have it in the bag.

In 2019, 96% of Canadian households reported using their own bags or containers for grocery shopping. Of those, 43% always used their own bags or containers, while approximately 1 in 10 (6%) rarely used them. Finally, 4% of Canadian households never used their own bags or containers when grocery shopping.

The numbers suggest that relatively few Canadians will have to adjust their habits as grocery retailers continue to reduce or eliminate plastic waste. A number of big-box retailers in Canada are already moving toward a plastic bag-free checkout.

So it’s a win–win situation—not only do you not have to worry about those heavy cans ripping the bottom of a plastic bag, but the landfills and oceans won’t see it either!
