Canada delivers first liquified natural gas overseas exports in July

Primary energy production increased 4.3% year over year in July 2025 with crude oil and equivalent products (+7.2%) and natural gas (+4.4%) leading the gain. Canada's first liquified natural gas export terminal began operations in the spring of 2025, with the first commercial export in July, when Canada exported 16.1 million gigajoules of natural gas to countries other than the United States. This was the first time Canada exported natural gas to countries overseas.

Older adults and persons with advanced cancer report having higher levels of palliative care

When asked about the most impactful illness they were living with in 2024, nearly one-third (30%) of participants in a study reported it being advanced cancer, followed by dementia or Alzheimer's disease (18%) and neurological conditions (16%). Among the three most reported health conditions, advanced cancer had the highest proportion of participants who received a high level of palliative care (42%). Care experiences varied across age groups: 32% of participants aged 65 years and older reported receiving a high level of palliative care, compared with 25% of those aged 45 to 64 years and 13% of those aged 15 to 44 years.

Obesity has increased among adults, especially young adults

During the period from 2022 to 2024, more than two-thirds (68%) of Canadian adults aged 18 to 79 had a body mass index classified as overweight or having obesity, an increase from 60% before the COVID-19 pandemic (the period from 2016 to 2019). Among adults aged 18 to 79, the prevalence of obesity increased from 25% before the pandemic (the period from 2016 to 2019) to 33% (the period from 2022 to 2024). The largest increase was observed among young adults aged 18 to 39, where obesity rose from 22% during the period from 2016 to 2019 to 33% during the period from 2022 to 2024 for males, and from 17% to 29% for females.

Colleges and CEGEPs more likely to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises

In 2023, over half of research and development contracts (57.2%) and partnerships (53.2%) were with universities. Furthermore, just under two-thirds (65.5%) of postsecondary institutions reported providing support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Overall, 19,269 SMEs received such support. The postsecondary institutions that were the most likely to provide support for SMEs in 2023 were colleges and CEGEPs (8,813 SMEs) and universities (6,520 SMEs).

The share of assets owned by foreign-controlled enterprises in Canada decreases

In 2023, the share of assets owned by foreign-controlled enterprises declined by 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. Canadian-controlled assets were valued at $15.3 trillion in 2023, representing 85.6% of total corporate assets in the Canadian economy. Foreign-controlled assets were valued at $2.6 trillion, accounting for the remaining 14.4% of assets. Canadian-controlled enterprises (+5.6%) recorded a higher year-over-year increase in asset growth from 2022 to 2023 compared with foreign-controlled enterprises (+2.9%).

Over one-third of public secondary school teachers are under the age of 40

There were 413,667 teachers working at Canadian public schools during the 2022/2023 school year, and approximately three in four were women. There were 4.5% more public school teachers teaching compared with a decade earlier. Over one-third of public secondary school teachers (35.7%) in 2022/2023 were under the age of 40 and there were more teachers under the age of 25 than over the age of 65 (7,818 versus 5,655).
