Fore! It’s finally mid-June, so no excuses, right? Many of you have had weeks to work on your golf game. We can’t help with your swing, but over here at Statistics Canada we’re finally getting around to teeing up some golf stats.
Over two thousand places to lose your ball
As of December 2025, there were 2,186 golf courses and country clubs spread across the country. Locations in this industry often provide food and beverage services, equipment rental and golf instruction (many of us could use a lesson or two).
In addition to all the sports and department stores, there were also 482 golf equipment and supplies specialty retailers nationwide, whose locations may also sell used equipment. Some are home to golf professionals, who can recommend the right equipment (or a few pointers).
Industry revenues continue on the upswing
The most recent operating statistics for golf courses and country clubs are from 2024, when the industry’s $4.1 billion in operating revenues climbed 6.0% from 2023 to reach a new all-time high. In 2024, revenues increased for the fourth year in a row and were up by 58.5% from almost $2.6 billion in 2012, when comparable data became available.
The increase in expenses (+7.1%) in 2024 slightly outpaced revenues, narrowing the profit margin from 10.6% in 2023 to 9.7% in 2024. Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits made up more than two-fifths (42.1%) of expenses in 2024.
Who’s up for a round?
The Households and the Environment Survey asks Canadian households about the outdoor activities they take part in close to home. In 2023, 13% of Canadian households said they played golf, croquet, lawn darts, lawn bowling, or bocci close to home. (We don’t know whether any of them cheated.)
On the next tee
