Reliable stats, real conversations: Social media at StatCan

June 30, 2026, 11:00 a.m. (EDT)

Canadians are surrounded by information—some of it accurate, some of it not. That’s why it’s more important than ever for people to have access to high-quality, trustworthy data. Statistics Canada plays a key role in this effort by engaging directly with Canadians where they tend to spend a lot of their time—on social media!

Why social media matters

Social media has become a primary information source for young people in Canada. In 2023, those aged 15 to 24 were over three times more likely to get their news and information from social media (62%) than was the case with older Canadians (18%).

Statistics Canada’s social media posts are designed to be clear, concise, easily understandable and relatable. Whether it’s helping Canadians better understand complex economic indicators like inflation or employment/unemployment numbers, or for a school project or to leverage a fun online trend, we have a stat for that!

Through social media, data users can more easily reach out to StatCan to find information on our website, or for help on how to complete the 2026 Census. This near real-time engagement also provides valuable insights into the products and services we offer, helping us better serve Canadians.

Connecting with Canadians

When StatCan joined social media back in 2010, our channels were mostly used to broadcast major statistical findings. Over time, the communication strategies have evolved from a one way medium to a lively, interactive space. Today, Statistics Canada operates 10 accounts across 6 platforms:

Together, these accounts have now gained nearly 1 million followers to date, with each account having its own voice and content strategy, tailored to meet the data needs of the agency’s diverse audiences.

No matter the platform, our goal remains the same: bring more awareness to the data we collect and make them available for Canadians to use in their day-to-day lives, empowering them to make informed decisions.
