Variables descriptions

abscid -- Absence identifier

• Type and length: Numeric(2)
• Description: Unique identifier for an absence from a job or employment spell with an employer. Paid vacation is not considered an absence. The same absence spell that crosses over two reference years should retain the same "abscid". Two distinct absence spells within the same employment spell would each have a distinct "abscid". Two concurrent absences with different employers would each have a distinct "abscid".
• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.

abspay8 -- Received pay during absence

• Type and length: Character(1)
• Description: Full, partial or no pay received during absence.
• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.
• Range and codes:
  • 1 : Full pay
  • 2 : Partial pay
  • 3 : No pay
  • 6 : Interim Processing Code

enddat8 -- Date absence spell ended

• Type and length: Character(8)
• Description: End date of absence spell. The absence spell may span more than one reference year. All SLID "date" type variables can be viewed as a concatenation of the three sub-component fields year, month and day. The standard SLID reserved values are assigned, when necessary, to the component fields, and not to the complete date variable. So it is possible to have a mixture of valid values and reserved codes in a "date" type variable.
• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.

• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.
• Range and codes:

endtyp8 -- Reason why absence was ended in processing

• Type and length: Character(1)
• Description: Reason why absence was ended in processing. This is an internal variable to be used for processing only.
• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.
• Range and codes:
  • 1 : Absence ended normally
  • 2 : Absence ended because the job absence was denied by the respondent
  • 3 : Absence ended because did not receive information about the job/absence in subsequent collections - either because no feedback, non-response or because respondent is no longer eligible for the labour interview (i.e. JOB.ENDTYP9 = '3')
  • 6 : Interim Processing Code
  • 7 : Don't Know
  • 8 : Refusal
  • 9 : Not Applicable

jobid -- Identifier for job or employment spell with employer

• Type and length: Numeric(2)
• Description: Unique identifier for a job or employment spell with an employer. The same employment spell that crosses over two reference years should retain the same "jobid". Two distinct employment spells with the same employer within the same reference year would each have a distinct "jobid".

• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation AND reason for absence was seasonal layoff.
• Range and codes:

nbwks8 -- Total number of weeks absence lasted

• Type and length: Numeric(3)

• Type and length: Character(2)
• Description: Main reason for absence. Voluntary absences: codes 01-07, 11, 90 Involuntary absences: codes 08-10 Prior to reference year 2001, code 03 meant 'Maternity Leave'.
• Population: Persons aged 16-69 AND had a job during the survey ref. period AND paid worker for that job AND not on-call schedule AND absent for 1 week or longer excl. paid vacation.
• Range and codes:
  • 01 : Own illness or disability - work related
  • 02 : Own illness or disability - not work related
  • 03 : Parental leave
  • 04 : Caring for own children
  • 05 : Caring for elder relative(s)
