Description for Figure A

The Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) collects information from the population aged 12 or older in the ten provinces and three territories. Respondents numbered 65,946 in 2007; 66,013 in 2008; and 61,679 in 2009—a total of 193,638.

Overall, 85% of these respondents agreed that their CCHS information could be shared and linked to other databases. The numbers agreeing to share and link were 57,083 in 2007; 55,592 in 2008; and 52,475 in 2009—a total of 165,150.

The analysis file for the high users study excluded respondents aged 12 to 49 (66,833); residents of Quebec (32,109); and residents of the territories 3,533).

The study sample consisted of 62,675 respondents aged 50 or older to the 2007, 2008 or 2009 CCHS. The information they provided was linked to Discharge Abstract Database records (December 2007 to December 2010) and to Canadian Mortality Database records (December 2007 to December 2010).

Of these respondents, 750 were high users in that they had been hospitalized within one year following their CCHS interview, during which time they had accumulated 30 or more hospital days. Another 5,898 were non-high users in that they had been hospitalized within one year of their CCHS interview, during which time they had accumulated 1 to 29 days. The remaining 56,027 respondents had not been hospitalized within one year of their CCHS interview.
