By collecting information about the health of Canadians, Statistics Canada health surveys, including the Canadian National Health Survey, aim to:
- support all levels of government by providing them with the timely information they need to evaluate existing programs and to design new ones suited to the needs of Canadians; and,
- provide more current, detailed and uniform health information in every province and territory.
Results from Statistics Canada health surveys are used for policy-making and program development.
Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.

Data sharing agreements
To reduce respondent burden, Statistics Canada has entered into data-sharing agreements with government and non-government organizations, which have agreed to keep the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes. Statistics Canada will only share data from this survey with those organizations that have demonstrated a requirement to use the data.
For this survey, Statistics Canada may share your responses with Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada, provincial and territorial ministries of Health and the Institut de la statistique du Québec. The information you provide to us can only be shared with your consent.
Record linkage
To minimize respondent burden and to enhance the data from this survey, Statistics Canada will combine responses with information from the tax records of household members. Statistics Canada may also add information from other surveys or administrative data sources.

Topics covered in the survey
The Canadian National Health Survey is a cross-sectional survey that collects information related to various aspects of health. Participants will be asked questions on multiple topics such as the perception of their physical and mental health state, on chronic conditions, the use of health care services, and behaviours thought to be related to health such as smoking, exposure to second-hand smoke, physical activity, consumption of fruits and vegetables and alcohol use.
