2010

In February, the 2010 Winter Olympics took place in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C.

In March, Canadian charter carrier Skyservice Airlines ceased operations, due to insolvency, and entered receivership.

In April, many northern hemisphere flights, including international flights between Canada and Europe, were halted due to atmospheric volcanic ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

In May, Swiss carrier Edelweiss Air began offering scheduled Calgary-Zurich and Vancouver-Zurich flights, on a seasonal basis.

In June, Virgin America launched a new service into Toronto.

In August, Mexicana de Aviacion, one of Mexico's two major airlines, announced it would cease operations by the end of the month.

In November, Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines began servicing the Canadian market, launching scheduled, non-stop flights between Toronto and Beijing.

2009

Canada experienced a recession during the global economic downturn of 2009.

Lower oil prices and a stronger Canadian dollar may have mitigated some of the impact of the recession, by reducing the cost of fuel.

In April, Conquest Vacations ceased operations. Skyservice, CanJet Airlines, and Air Canada all provided charter services for the tour operator.

In May, an outbreak of the H1N1 influenza virus in Mexico resulted in Air Canada and WestJet temporarily suspending their operations into Mexico.

The following foreign carriers ceased their Canadian operations: Aeroflot, Czech Airlines, Flyglobespan, Olympic Airways, and Singapore Airlines.

WestJet expanded its services to the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Porter Airlines introduced new services to St. John's, Thunder Bay and Boston, and expanded services to Halifax and Ottawa.

Turkish Airlines began operating in Canada, with a new service between Toronto and Istanbul.
