The number of aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and/or flight service stations continued to increase in 2008. These 95 airports reported 6.21 million movements in 2008 compared with 6.07 million movements in 2007, an increase of 2.3% (+141,467 movements).

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 2.1% (+89,030 movements) in 2008 compared with a year earlier.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) increased 2.9% (+52,437 movements) in 2008 compared with 2007.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 4.93 million aircraft take-offs and landings in 2008, up 1.6% compared with 2007 (4.85 million movements). Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 22 of these airports in 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 71.1% at London, Ontario to a decline of 14.1% at Hamilton, Ontario.

Itinerant movements increased 2.0% (+66,842 movements) in 2008. Twenty-one airports recorded increases in itinerant movements in 2008. The year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 34.4% at London, Ontario to a decline of 8.7% at Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Local movements increased by 12,660 movements (+0.8%) in 2008. Fourteen airports recorded increases in 2008. London, Ontario recorded the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 49,375 movements (+120.9%) while Calgary/Springbank, Alberta reported the largest decline with 14,189 fewer movements (-12.8%) compared with the previous year.

Over the course of the year, the air traffic control towers at Sudbury, Ontario and Montreal/Mirabel International, Quebec closed in June and December respectively and reopened as flight service stations. Meanwhile, the flight service station at Fort McMurray, Alberta closed effective October 2008 and reopened as an air traffic control tower. Effective December 2008, the flight service stations at Kuujjuarapik, Quebec and St Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador were closed. As a result, the data are displayed in this publication in the section pertaining to the airport’s tower category for the period while under that category.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 53 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 1.28 million aircraft take-offs and landings in 2008, up 5.1% (+61,695 movements). Year-over-year increases in aircraft movements were reported by 26 of these airports in 2008. The variations ranged from an increase of 115.2% at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to decline of 21.7% at Lloydminster, Alberta.

The number of itinerant movements increased by 2.4% (+22,188 movements) in 2008 compared with the previous year. Year-over-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 64.3% increase (+15,965 movements) at Fredericton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 19.8% (-4,150 movements) at St. Catharines, Ontario.

The number of local movements recorded in 2008 increased by 13.5% (+39,777 movements) compared with a year earlier. Fredericton International, New Brunswick reported the largest gain in local movements, increasing by 23,287 movements (+251.9%) compared with 2007. Kamloops, British Columbia reported the largest decline in local movements, dropping by 3,753 movements (-25.3%) compared with 2007.
