Causes of death, 2009

In 2009, 71,125 deaths in Canada were attributable to cancer (malignant neoplasms), up 0.8% from 2008. 

There were 68,342 deaths attributable to major cardiovascular diseases¹, down 1.9% from the previous year.

The two causes of death combined were responsible for 58% of all deaths in Canada in 2009, down from 64% in 2000.

1. Major cardiovascular diseases include diseases of heart, essential hypertension and hypertensive renal disease, cerebrovascular diseases, atherosclerosis and other diseases of circulatory system.
