  1. The federal government spent $4.01 billion on culture in 2008/2009, compared with $3.74 billion in 2007/2008.
  2. Broadcasting accounted for the biggest share (47.4 %) of the total federal spending on culture, followed by the heritage sector (28.4 %), which includes museums, public archives and national libraries, historic and nature parks, and historic sites.
  3. Federal government operating and capital expenditures on culture accounted for 81.1% of the total, whereas grants, contributions and transfers for culture represented 18.9%.
  4. Provincial and territorial governments spent $3.04 billion on culture in 2008/2009, compared with $2.88 billion in 2007/2008.
  5. Provincial and territorial governments allocated 59.8 % of their total cultural expenditures to grants, contributions and transfers, while operating and capital spending represented 40.2%.
  6. Municipal governments spent a total of $2.70 billion on culture in 2008, compared with $2.61 billion in 2007.
  7. Excluding inter-governmental transfers, consolidated spending on culture by all three levels of government amounted to $9.26 billion in 2008/2009. This is higher than in 2007/2008 when it was $9.09 billion (constant 2008/2009 dollars).
