Estimates of Research and Development Expenditures in the Higher Education Sector, 2006/2007

  1. Spending on research and development in the higher education sector amounted to $9.6 billion (current dollars) in the fiscal year 2006/2007, up 1.1% from 2005/2006 (table 1-1).
  2. The higher education sector includes affiliated research hospitals, experimental stations and clinics. Social sciences and humanities accounted for 20% of the total, health sciences 39%, and other natural sciences the remaining 41% (table 1-2).
  3. Higher education institutions themselves were the largest contributors, spending $4.4 billion, 46% of the total. The second largest contributor was the federal government, funding $2.5 billion, or 26% (table 1-3).
