  1. As of April 1, 2012, the Canadian population was estimated at 34,755,600.
  2. In the first quarter of 2012, the population of Canada grew by 85,300 (+0.2%). This is fairly similar to the growth observed in the same period in 2011.
  3. Net international migration accounted for more than two-thirds (71%) of the country's population growth in the first quarter of 2012.
  4. Preliminary estimates show that population growth remained stronger in the three Prairie provinces. However, three of the four Atlantic provinces saw their population decrease in the first quarter of 2012.
  5. Alberta remained the province with the highest population growth in the country. Its population growth rate (+0.8%) was more than triple the Canadian rate in the first quarter of 2012.
