Rates are based on the average population over the period.
Natural increase is the difference between the number of births and deaths.
Net international migration basically refers to the number of moves between Canada and abroad, accompanied by a change in usual place of residence; it consists of the following components: immigration, emigration, returning emigrants, net temporary emigration and net non-permanent residents.
The period covered by the current record keeping system as used at Statistics Canada starts in July 1971.
Net emigration is obtained as follows: difference between emigration and returning emigration to which is added net temporary emigration.
A rate higher than -0.1% and lower than 0.1% is, for the rest of the analysis, considered being negligible.
