November 2011 (preliminary) (Previous release)

Sales for the food services and drinking places industry were up 0.6% from October to $4.3 billion in November. During the same period, the price of food purchased in restaurants increased 0.2% as measured by the Consumer Price Index.

Of the four industry sectors, two posted higher sales than in October. The strongest growth in sales was in the limited-service restaurant sector (+1.1%). Sales in the special food services sector rose 1.0%. This sector includes food service contractors, caterers and mobile food services. Sales at full-service restaurants were stable and sales at drinking places decreased 0.8%.

In November, seven provinces posted higher sales, two declined and one was stable. The largest increase occurred in Prince Edward Island (+1.8%), followed by British Columbia (+1.4%). The largest decrease occurred in Newfoundland and Labrador (-3.5%). Sales in Nova Scotia were stable.

On a year-over-year basis, sales for the food services and drinking places industry increased 6.2%, while the price of food purchased in restaurants increased 3.0%.

Seasonally adjusted data are revised for the three previous months. Data are also revised annually. Revisions to improve data quality and coherence are based on information not available at the time of the initial estimates.
