Study: A portrait of citizenship in Canada from the 2021 Census

Released: 2022-11-09

In 2021, over 9 in 10 people living in Canada (91.2%) were Canadian citizens, either by birth or by naturalization. About four in five eligible immigrants (80.7%) were Canadian citizens.

A new study published today in the Census in Brief series provides insights into the citizenship status of Canada's population. "A portrait of citizenship in Canada from the 2021 Census" examines the population who reported having citizenship in Canada or another country, or having multiple citizenships, as well as the immigrant population who have Canadian citizenship.

This study complements the results from the 2021 Census of Population on immigration and ethnocultural and religious diversity and the infographic on citizenship released on October 26, 2022.
