Detailed preliminary data on confirmed cases of COVID-19, January 15, 2020, to April 4, 2024 (revised data)

Released: 2024-04-12

An updated set of preliminary data on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported by provincial and territorial public health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. Along with this dataset are two aggregated tables that summarize the information available in the dataset. The updated information covers the period from January 15, 2020, to April 4, 2024.

The dataset and tables include information for 4,458,972 COVID-19 cases in Canada as of April 4, 2024. The data include detailed information received by PHAC from the provincial and territorial public health authorities, such as the clinical course and outcome, such as hospitalization, intensive care admission and death. Data are also available by demographic characteristics, such as age group and sex.

  Note to readers

Because the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving, these data are considered preliminary and are subject to change. The data published by Statistics Canada account only for the cases for which detailed information was submitted by the provincial or territorial public health authority to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). These data may not match the total number of cases at the provincial and territorial levels, which are regularly reported by each jurisdiction and compiled by PHAC. The discrepancy may be attributable to delays in reporting and variability in reporting cut-offs. As a result, these data are a subset of the total of all reported cases in Canada.

Routine updates on health outcome status are not given uniformly across Canada. Therefore, the data may underestimate the number of hospitalizations, admissions to intensive care units and deaths.

As part of its continued commitment to providing Canadians with much-needed information during the pandemic, Statistics Canada partnered with PHAC to make preliminary information on the number of COVID-19 cases available to the public.

The information is available in the downloadable dataset "Preliminary dataset on confirmed cases of COVID-19, Public Health Agency of Canada" (Catalogue number13260003). This dataset provides detailed information on clinical course and outcome, such as hospitalization, intensive care admission and death. It is downloadable in comma-separated values format.

The table "Detailed preliminary information on cases of COVID-19, 2020-2024: 4 dimensions (Aggregated data), Public Health Agency of Canada" provides aggregated national and regional results on hospitalization status, intensive care unit status and health outcome, by age group and sex.

The table "Detailed preliminary information on cases of COVID-19, 2020-2024: 5 dimensions (Aggregated data), Public Health Agency of Canada" provides aggregated national and regional results on hospitalization status, intensive care unit status and health outcome, by age group and sex.

The publication User Guide and Data Dictionary for Preliminary COVID-19 Data (Catalogue number13260002) is also available. This user guide—with appended data dictionary—provides Canadians and researchers with the information required to use the "Preliminary dataset on confirmed cases of COVID-19, Public Health Agency of Canada" (Catalogue number13260003). It provides background information on COVID-19 and describes the objectives, coverage, content, limitations and data quality concerns of the table.
