Consultation objectives

From October 15, 2018 to January 31, 2019, Statistics Canada is conducting a consultation to gather input from Canadians to help validate how we are measuring poverty.

Recently, the Government of Canada announced that the Market Basket Measure (MBM) will be used as Canada's Official Poverty Line. Statistics Canada is currently conducting a comprehensive review of the MBM.

The MBM is a measure of low income which is based on the cost of a basket of goods and services that individuals and families require to meet their basic needs and achieve a modest standard of living. Wherever individuals and families are living across the country, if they cannot afford the cost of this basket of goods and services in their particular community, they will be considered to be living below Canada's Official Poverty Line.

By participating in this consultation, you will be supporting Statistics Canada's ability to accurately measure low income and poverty.

Why do we conduct this survey?

The purpose of this survey is to collect information for producing national and provincial level estimates of potato production and value.

These estimates will be used to assess the economic health of the industry. Agricultural producers and industry analysts will work with this information to make production and marketing decisions, and government analysts will use it to develop agricultural policies in Canada.

Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.

Your participation in this survey is required under the authority of the Statistics Act.

Statistics Canada will use the information from this survey for statistical purposes only.

To enhance the data from this survey and to reduce the reporting burden, Statistics Canada may combine the acquired data with information from other surveys or from administrative sources.

Data-sharing agreements

To reduce respondent burden, Statistics Canada has entered into data-sharing agreements with provincial and territorial statistical agencies and other government organizations, which have agreed to keep the data confidential and use them only for statistical purposes. Statistics Canada will only share data from this survey with those organizations that have demonstrated a requirement to use the data.

Section 11 of the Statistics Act provides for the sharing of information with provincial and territorial statistical agencies that meet certain conditions. These agencies must have the legislative authority to collect the same information, on a mandatory basis, and the legislation must provide substantially the same provisions for confidentiality and penalties for disclosure of confidential information as the Statistics Act. Because these agencies have the legal authority to compel businesses to provide the same information, consent is not requested and businesses may not object to the sharing of the data.

For this survey, there are Section 11 agreements with the provincial statistical agencies of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The shared data will be limited to information pertaining to business establishments located within the jurisdiction of the respective province.

Section 12 of the Statistics Act provides for the sharing of information with federal, provincial or territorial government organizations. Under Section 12, you may refuse to share your information with any of these organizations by writing a letter of objection to the Chief Statistician, specifying the organizations with which you do not want Statistics Canada to share your data and mailing it to the following address:

Why am I required to complete two Commodity Schedules in the same calendar year?

The Preliminary Estimate survey is used to provide an estimate for the current year ending December 31st and has a due date of November 1st.

I only crush for others. Why do I have to fill in a survey form when they fill one in?

Crushing is an important part of the sand and gravel industry and we need information on both revenue and expenditures from crushing for our data to be complete. There are cases where one company will crush in another company’s pit. The company doing the crushing needs to complete an Establishment Schedule MIN-100.1 to indicate the revenue from crushing on line 8.6 and any related expenditures, but does not need to complete a Commodity Schedule MIN-182.1.

• Recent changes:
  • An updated and improved way to discover geospatial data as well as related products and reference materials was launched. Access to this redesigned web portal is available via the Geography link located in the top navigation menu on the Statistics Canada website. Outcome of this redesigned is as a result of the findings from the virtual group discussions that took place in June, 2021 with geography data users.
  • Please note that Internet Explorer will no longer be supported on the Statistics Canada website.
  • On select data tables, new vector-level footnotes are available that provide direct access to detailed, context-specific definitions and documentation.
  • Ask us your question, a live agent will assist you.
  • Selected new, unpopulated fields that appeared inside the .CSV metadata file components are removed and the correction flag fields reinstated. The full table download files for tables that have been affected will be corrected in a phased approach.

  • Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) are available for data tables.
