The Informatics Professional Services Price Report collects information on the prices of various informatics services such as:

  • data processing and hosting
  • general purpose software
  • computer systems design
  • custom software design

This information is used to develop price indexes that measure price changes over time. These price indexes are useful indicators of economic activity in the informatics industry, and can also prove helpful as a supplementary tool for performance evaluation, cost monitoring, contract assessment and benchmark comparisons. In addition, these indexes are used by Canada's System of Macroeconomic Accounts to arrive at real value added estimates for the industry and to measure changes in productivity.

Your information may also be used by Statistics Canada for other statistical and research purposes.

What is the purpose of the survey?

Informatics professional services price indexes measure annual price changes for various informatics services, such as data processing and hosting, general purpose software design, computer systems design, and custom software design services

Why was my company selected for this survey?

Most businesses are randomly selected to represent other businesses with similar characteristics, such as size, industry, revenue or number of employees. However, some companies must be included because they contribute substantially to their industry or region.

How will this benefit my firm?

Businesses use the indexes produced from this information to evaluate their competitiveness, to index long-term contracts and to track costs. Also, many companies, some of which may use your services, use Statistics Canada's indexes to help them determine what they should be paying for contracts. It is therefore to your advantage to provide the best information possible so that the indexes accurately reflect price movement for the services that you provide.

Who will use this information? Why is this important?

Statistics Canada's business surveys provide both the private and public sectors with vital information that is used in their decision making processes. Many businesses and organizations need accurate information to track growth and changes in this industry.

    • Industry associations, business analysts and investors use the data to better understand rapidly evolving business environments, such as new technologies and trade opportunities, as well as investments in new product lines.
    • Individual businesses use the information to monitor their performance against industry averages.
    • Schools and universities use survey results to study the economy.
    • Governments need the information to make decisions about labour and fiscal policies and business assistance programs for industries.

    When will results be available?

The survey results are scheduled for release in November 2020 in The Daily.
