Fees - RDC

University access fees

Determine access fees

Fees can apply to certain research projects conducted in the university Research Data Centres (RDCs). According to the Canadian Research Data Centre Network's (CRDCN) Access and Fee for Service Policy, researchers working in the RDCs are either:

  1. primary/internal users, or
  2. secondary/external users

Primary/internal users

The primary users of the RDCs are not subject to access fees. They include university-based researchers who:

  1. are employed by or students in CRDCN partner universities (and/or whose projects are directly funded by an agency which is providing core financial support for the sustained operations of the CRDCN); and
  2. are doing self-directed research.

Secondary/external users

The partnership between the CRDCN and Statistics Canada also provides for approved fee-for-service access to and use of the facilities and data by three categories of secondary users.

  • Category A

    Category A

All university-based researchers (excluding students) who are undertaking self-directed research but:

    1. who are not employed by a CRDCN partner university; or
    2. who are not professors emeriti of a CRDCN partner university; or
    3. whose projects are not directly funded by an agency which is providing core financial support for the sustained operations of the CRDCN

All category A research projects are subject to the following access fees:

$6,250 (plus applicable tax) for the first 200 hours of access in the RDC. Access may be shared by two or more researchers. For projects requiring more than 200 hours of access, additional access can be purchased in blocks of 100 hours at $3,250 per block of additional time purchased. For projects requiring more than 25 data files the cost for each additional data file is $700 per file.

All students undertaking self-directed research, regardless of whether or not they are affiliated with a CRDCN partner university are also deemed primary users of the RDCs. For more information on category A research projects, and to see the list of agencies that provide core funding to the network, please see the CRDCN AFFS Policy.

  • Category B

    Category B

Researchers working for government or the charitable and non-profit sector including university-based researchers, professors emeriti and students undertaking directed or fee-for-service (contract) work for these sectors.

All category B research projects in university RDCs are subject to the following access fees:

$6,250 (plus applicable tax) for the first 200 hours of access in the RDC. Access may be shared by two or more researchers. For projects requiring more than 200 hours of access, additional access can be purchased in blocks of 100 hours at $3,250 per block of additional time purchased. For projects requiring more than 25 data files the cost for each additional data file is $700 per file. For more information please see the CRDCN AFFS Policy.

  • Category C

    Category C

All researchers working for the private sector including industry associations, university-based researchers, professors emeriti and students undertaking directed or fee-for-service (contract) work for the private sector.

All category C research projects are subject to the following access fees:

$9,500 (plus applicable tax) for the first 200 hours of access in addition to $3,875 (plus applicable tax) for each data file requested. Access may be shared by two or more researchers. For projects requiring more than 200 hours of access, additional access can be purchased in blocks of 100 hours at $4,750 per block of additional time purchased. For more information please see the CRDCN AFFS Policy.

Category C Supplement

A 25% supplement will apply to the fee-for-service for category C users in recognition that the private sector does not contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of the infrastructure and data development of the Network in the same way as the government and university sectors.

SAS supplement

A 10% surcharge will be assessed and remitted to SAS for all projects that require the use of SAS and which involve researchers in category B or C above.

Note:

Please note that when one member of a research team who will access an RDC is considered a category A, B or C researcher, the entire project is subject to access fees even if all other members of the research team are primary users.

Government access fees

Federal government funded projects in the national capital region

For government researchers, fees are determined upon proposal submission based on the access needs of the research team, accessing organization and location of access.
