Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, Canada and United States, 2023

Canadian millers milled 3.3 million tonnes of wheat in 2023, up 0.9% from 2022, while total flour produced increased to 2.5 million tonnes, up 0.6% compared with the previous year.

In 2023, wheat milled in Canada, excluding durum, rose 0.7% compared with 2022 to 3.1 million tonnes, while durum wheat milled increased 3.1% to 224 367 tonnes.

Wheat milled by Canadian millers is mainly used for human food in Canada, with exports accounting for on average 5.8% of total wheat supply over the past five years.

The majority of Canada's flour exports go to the United States. In 2023, Canada exported a total of 211 799 tonnes of wheat flour, with 89.3% going to the United States. Thailand (3.9%) ranked second.

Millers in the United States milled 24.6 million tonnes of wheat in 2023, a decrease of 2.6% from 2022, and total flour produced decreased 2.4% to 19.1 million tonnes.

The quantity of wheat, excluding durum, milled in the United States decreased 2.9% in 2023, compared with 2022, totalling 22.9 million tonnes. Durum wheat milled was up 1.9% to 1.8 million tonnes over the same period.
