Canadian Housing Statistics Program, 2022

Today, the Canadian Housing Statistics Program is releasing new data on residential properties for the reference year 2022.

These data provide detailed information on the characteristics of residential properties—including their property type, period of construction, living area and assessment value—in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

The data released today include statistics on residency ownership, which describe the proportion of properties owned by non-residents of Canada.

Note to readers

Data for the 2022 reference year reflect the stock of properties available on the property assessment roll for each province and territory for that year. The exact stock date varies between provinces and territories.

The unit of observation represents residential properties rather than dwellings. Residential properties include all land and structures intended for private dwelling purposes, including residential vacant land. A residential property may consist of one or multiple dwellings. Single-detached houses, for example, usually consist of only one dwelling, while properties with multiple residential units can include many dwellings.

Assessment values for properties built since the last assessment year (2016) in Ontario are available for the first time. Consequently, users are advised to limit comparisons in assessment values between 2021 and 2022 in Ontario.

Data for Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories are not available at the provincial or territorial levels.

Data on the characteristics of residential properties in Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Yukon will be released at a later point.

Geographical boundaries

The Canadian Housing Statistics Program (CHSP) disseminates data based on the geographical boundaries from the Standard Geographical Classification 2016.

The CHSP database does not contain information about residential properties on reserves.
