Child care participation among off-reserve First Nations, Métis and Inuit children aged 1 to 5: Exploring parental satisfaction and cultural responsiveness across child care types, 2022

In 2022, parents of Indigenous children in Indigenous-specific child care were more satisfied with their child care provider than those in centre-based child care. Parents with higher satisfaction reported a stronger alignment with traditional and cultural values and customs of Indigenous families and a greater sensitivity to their unique needs.

A new study using the 2022 Indigenous Peoples Survey examines child care participation among off-reserve First Nations, Métis and Inuit children aged 1 to 5 years. The study includes parental satisfaction with child care, cultural relevance, language use, alternate care preferences, barriers to participation and the sociodemographic profile of those in child care.
