There were 127,248 new motor vehicles sold in Canada in December, decreasing 6.1% from December 2024. In dollar terms, sales decreased 7.4% in December 2025 compared with one year earlier. Over the same period, sales of new passenger cars fell by 20.2%, while sales of new trucks saw a smaller decline of 4.2%.
In December 2025, 15,949 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold, a decrease of 35.7% from one year earlier. New ZEVs comprised 12.5% of total new motor vehicles sold, compared with 18.3% in December 2024.
Note to readers
The term "zero-emission vehicle" (ZEV) refers to any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. The ZEV category includes battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
