Given the rapidly evolving economic situation, Statistics Canada is providing an advance estimate of sales in the manufacturing sector for January. Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales rose 3.9% in January. The largest increases were in the petroleum and coal product, motor vehicle, primary metal and railroad rolling stock industries.
This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of 69.7%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous 12 months has been 94.2%. As Statistics Canada continues to collect data for the January reference month, this early indicator is subject to a higher revision rate than our regular monthly release.
Note to readers
The percentage change is calculated using seasonally adjusted data in current dollars.
This flash estimate is a special product published in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide Canadians with timely information on the manufacturing sector. The official estimate of manufacturing sales for the month of January, which will be based on a more complete set of survey and administrative data, comparable with the previously published estimates based on NAICS 2017 and is scheduled for release on March 14, 2023.
