Infrastructure economic account, updated 2021

June 14, 2022, 8:46 a.m. (EDT)

The Infrastructure economic account isolates the role and estimates the impact of infrastructure on Canada, the provinces and the territories. It provides a macroeconomic perspective of the infrastructure assets that represent the physical structures and systems that support the production of goods and services and their delivery to and consumption by governments, businesses and citizens.

The Infrastructure economic account includes estimates of investment and stock by industry and type of infrastructure asset. Investment means spending by businesses or governments during a given year for the purposes of construction of structures (airports, roads, etc.), purchases of equipment (locomotives, turbines, etc.), and improvements to existing facilities.

Estimates are also available for the economic contribution of investment in infrastructure assets, which is the estimated impact on the economy resulting from the production of those assets. It is measured in terms of the associated value added (contribution to gross domestic product), compensation of employees (wages, salaries and other remuneration), and number of jobs. The economic account also includes the environmental perspective of infrastructure, which provides insights into the relationship between investment in infrastructure and the environment.

Data related to infrastructure, including investment, stock and remaining useful service life have been updated for the 2021 reference year, due to the incorporation of updated source data for capital investment.
